University research project: Wood-granite composite bridge

Koblenz - DE December 2022

Support of an interesting project of the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences...

Together with other partners, IB Miebach was able to support the world's only prototype of a hybrid designed bridge in wood-granite composite construction to date. For this research project, the Federal Ministry of Education BMFB had provided Koblenz University of Applied Sciences with a grant amounting to 416,289 euros, which was then topped up by the cooperating companies Kusser Granitwerke GmbH, Schaffitzel Holzindustrie GmbH + Co. KG and Ingenieurbüro Miebach with cash and in-kind contributions totalling a further 100,000 euros.

The aim of the research project, supervised by Prof. Dr. Andreas Laubach and Prof. Tim Göckel, was to develop a bonding agent to connect the granite and the wood in a shear-resistant way. One of the special findings of the project was the knowledge of how to create a load-bearing connection with wood in materials such as granite - which, unlike concrete, is not flowable - by means of adhesive or screw connections or by other means. For the use of the metallic connections, the researchers were able to rely on the support of Prof. Dr. Robert Pandorf from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
